40’s Night Celebration: The Big Bout Launch Party
August 25, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The world of Panama City, Florida, continues to come to vivid and atmospheric life in Michael Lister’s new Jimmy “Soldier” Riley noir novel, The Big Bout.
The Big Bout is the fourth novel in the series featuring the Panhandle in the 1940’s during World War II, following 2014’s The Big Hello.
Once again readers are invited to walk the mean streets of wartime Panama City with Jimmy “Soldier” Riley, a wounded, woman-haunted knight errant in the romantic, suspenseful, mystery series Publishers Weekly calls “a promising private detective series set in 1940s Florida.” Library Journal adds, “Peppered with snappy dialog, this hard-boiled mystery by award winner Lister is a swell read.”
This popular and acclaimed series has been praised by readers and reviewers alike. In a Starred Review, Publishers Weekly said, “Lister’s hard-edged prose ranks with the best of contemporary noir fiction.”
In The Big Bout, Jimmy, Clip, and Lauren are in for another thrilling adventure. In late 1943, Miki Matsumoto, a beautiful Japanese teenager who has been in hiding since escaping from an internment camp, is working as Riley’s secretary in gratitude for his rescuing her from a vicious kidnapper. Miki’s sinister uncle threatens to kill the gumshoe and his girlfriend, Lauren Lewis, unless they disclose Miki’s location. Meanwhile, a boxing manager hires Riley and his best friend Clip to protect Fighting Freddy Freeman, whose life has been threatened on the eve of a bout that could land him a chance to take on heavyweight champ Joe Louis. When Freddy’s opponent, Gentleman Jeff Bennett, disappears, another client hires Riley to find Bennett.
A 40s night celebration is planned for the release of The Big Bout. 40s music, dance, pictures, presentations, and even 40s film noir will all be featured. This special evening will take place at the Bay County Library on 11th Street on August 25th at 6:00 p.m.
Lister will be talking about, reading from, and signing The Big Bout and his other books. Bay County Public Library’s Local History Room will be displaying pictures and items from Panama City in the 1940s and staff member and amateur historian Ann Robbins will give an informative presentation about the era. Rocky Akins will perform songs from the 40s, members of That Swing Thing will demonstrate 40s era dances, and attendees can even get a picture with a 40s era pinup girl in front of a scene of classic film noir projected by The Public Eye.
